Holtzendorff-Dutch Hill Cemetery; Camden County, Georgia @GlynnGen.com
Holtzendorff-Dutch Hill Cemetery
Records compiled by Tara
Tutcher-Kimmel, Amy Lyn Hedrick, Andrea Witwer, & Karen M. Gleason
This cemetery is the final resting place of people who were once enslaved by the
Holtzendorff family
and the descendants of those enslaved. Kinlaw
Cemetery and Woodbine Cemetery could be considered "sister cemeteries", forming
a triangle surrounding Berne Plantation which was owned by the
John Lewis Kale
Holtzendorff family. You will find the
same surnames in all three cemeteries, Dawson,
Holtzendorff, Nightingale, Baker, Campbell,
and others.
THIS CEMETERY IS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY, PLEASE
CONTACT THE KINGSLAND HUNTING CLUB FOR ACCESS
Death certificates record burials in Woodbine Cemetery when relatives are
listed as being buried at "Crooked River" or "Holtzendorf(f)
Cemetery", therefore, when I found such instances, I included the person in this
transcription, just in case. One person is recorded as being buried at Wolf Bay
and another at Woodbine Cemetery but earlier researchers have them listed in
this cemetery so I have recorded them for posterity.
Most of this listing was compiled by using death
certificates found online at
FamilySearch.org using
the Georgia and Florida death certificate databases. I have not gone through all
of the death records to find all listings because, unfortunately, you cannot
search by place of burial.
So far, I have found 70 burial records either through
the death certificates, publications like Camden's Challenge, or an
actual tombstone that was found.
As you can see by the sign pictured to the left, this
cemetery is in peril. You can no longer find it as it has been completely
overtaken by nature. We literally had to cut our way in when previous photos
showed this cemetery was being cared for and kept cut back.
When driving up to where we thought the cemetery was
located, we passed by the sign, but in about 30 feet we saw little white crosses
peeking up through the brush so we turned around and parked, then came back on
foot which is when I saw the sign, then we started edging our way in about five
feet, then we would come out, walk down a little ways, go back in, and we
counted dozens of crosses, some damaged, one had a tree fallen on top of it,
then we found our first tombstone.
This cemetery needs help, it needs professional help as
you cannot just go in and chop away as you will destroy the wooden crosses, same
as if a controlled burn was done to remove the brush. Maybe, one day, someone
will have the funds and the man-power to clean this cemetery out because,
eventually, it will be completely lost. It takes up at least one acre, maybe
more.
