Powell Cemetery
According to research done by the Lower Altamaha Historical Society for their book "Cemeteries of McIntosh County, Georgia", this property was owned by Allen Beverly Powell (1783-1844) in the early 1800's. He was a veteran of the War of 1812, commissioner of McIntosh County Academy, president of the Georgia senate 1824-25, and was also a senator. He married Mary Calder of Contentment Plantation and two daughter married into the Pease family of Connecticut and one married into the McDonald family, a Scottish Clan-Family that arrived with the Highlanders to McIntosh in the 1700's.
Over the years, the property has changed hands several times and the current owners would like for the cemetery to be cleaned up and start preservation and conservation efforts in order to keep it looking beautiful. The following photos were taken by J. Steven Hinson who has been asked to clean up the cemetery. These are the before photos and over the next several months, we will see some after photos.
