The following
records were transcribed from images found on the Family Search Website.
I have used creative license in transcribing some names; for example,
names that were misspelled but I knew to be spelled differently, or, for
formatting's sake, instead of using someone's initials, I spelled out
their full name. Even with this, there are still misspellings or
questionable transcribing; therefore, always
reference the original records. This is NOT a complete history of the church; it is only the history that was provided inside this particular church ledger; also, the title page and other inside matter that could not be entered into a spreadsheet.
St. Cyprian’s Church This book is the property of the Bishop
of Georgia. It must be open to his inspection upon demand and in case of
a change of the Minister in charge must be promptly returned to the
Bishop.
A.M. Forsythe served as rector at St. Cyprian’s Church Jan. 1st,
1918 to May 31st, 1925.

CHURCH AND
CLERGYMAN’S RECORD BOOK Missionary work begun by The
Hon. & Rev. J.W. Leigh of
England, among the Negroes in McIntosh Co. & Darien. In December 1873, the first service was
held on Butler’s Island, about which the
Rev. Mr. Leigh writes as
follows: “Last Sunday we met at 11AM in the room which has for some
years been used as a church by the negroes, but which is small and most
inconvenient, but for the present must do for our service. I read
through the service and spoke of the Gospel of the day. I found them
very attentive, and we sang the old Hundreth and another hymn, out of
the American Hymnal Sunday afternoon at 3PM. I held school for the
children but it was also attended by quite old [sic] people.” The
following year Mr. Leigh fitted up a large room in the over seers’ [sic] house,
where we had regular services and Sunday school for two years, during
which time there were 14 adults baptized and 22 candidates for
confirmation presented to the Bishop. Also 3 marriages. Many of the
Negroes in Darien asked Mr. Leigh
to hold service there as well as on the Island, he began to do so on
Monday afternoons in the building rented for the purpose by
Mr. Henry Todd a liberal
intelligent Colored man, who, although not an Episcopalian was willing
to aid any religious movement. This was in 1875 and 1876. This year the

CHURCH AND
CLERGYMAN’S RECORD BOOK the building of a regular church was
begun for the negroes on grounds given them by
Mrs. Leigh. The money for
this Church was subscribed principally in England and at the North. Much
of the work upon it was done by a colored carpenter called by name
Lewis Jackson and others free
of charge. In 1876 the 2nd Sunday after
Easter, The Bishop of Georgia, consecrated the Church which had been
named St. Cyprian. It was hardly finished, but as
Mr. Leigh was about to return
to England and there was no debt upon the Church the Bishop consented to
the consecration of it before the time of
Mr. Leigh’s departure in 1877. He held services regularly every
Sunday both in Darien and on Butler’s Island. He performed several marriages and
baptized several children. The Church records should show the number. 1873.
Bishop Beckwith of Georgia
confirmed 21 on Butler’s Island, presented by the
Rev. Mr. Leigh and April 9th
eleven in Darien, presented by
Rev. Leigh and Clute.
During the year. Mr. Leigh
reported 29 communicants and 14 Baptisms 3 marriages. This work has been
cared by the Rectors of St. Andrew’s Parish from time to time till
regular missionaries were sent.

on March 2nd 1901, the roof was completed, and building put
