      Sr. 
                 
      William Bernard Barnes, 
	  Sr., 80 years old of Frederick, Maryland, passed 
      away November 15, 2005. He was the husband of Yvonne
	  D. Barnes. 
                
      Born January 11, 1925, on St. Simons Island, GA, he was the son of the 
      late James Barnes, Sr. and
	  Creola Barnes. 
          The youngest of five 
      brothers and three sisters, Mr. Barnes 
	  was educated in the public schools of Glynn County, Ga., and served in the 
	  U.S. Marine Corp in World War II. 
      Mr. Barnes mastered the trade of bricklaying, which he in turn taught to 
      war veterans in Waycross, Ga. A graduate of Bluefield State College, 
	  Bluefield, W. Va., he held a B.S. degree in mathematics. Mr. 
	  Barnes 
      taught school in Maryland, Georgia and West Virginia. He also served 
      ten years on Frederick County Board of Education, serving his last term as 
      Vice President. He studied at John Hopkins University on the Esso 
      Education Foundation Grant, 1958-1959 and studied at Morgan State College 
      on a National Science Foundation Grant during the summer of 1961. He 
      also studied at Northwestern University on a National Science Foundation 
      Grand during the summer of 1962. Additionally, he received a 
      National Science Foundation Grant which allowed him to participate in an 
      in-service Institute for Teachers of Mathematics at the University of 
      Maryland. 
          After his time as an 
      educator, Mr. Barnes became a successful entrepreneur, buying and selling 
      several businesses, retiring from his final business venture, Sequoia Inc. 
      (Sequo Liquors) in 1996. 
          Mr. 
	  Barnes was a former 
      member of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Frederick where he served 
      as a deacon, a former member of Downtown Community Church where he served 
      as an elder, and a current member of Maranatha Community Church of God in 
      Frederick. He was a lifetime member of the illustrious Alpha Phi 
      Alpha Fraternity, a life member of the N.A.A.C.P., a former member of the 
      Independent Grocers Association of Maryland, and a former member of the 
      Rotary Club of Frederick. 
          In addition to his wife 
      Yvonne he leaves to cherish his precious memory; three daughters, 
	  Donna Jenkins (David), of Columbia, SC; 
	  Angela Twine (Johnnie), of Ft. Worth, 
      TX; Treva Barnes of Atlanta, GA; three sons, 
	  Charles (Puggy) Barnes 
      (Pamela) of Frederick, MD; Waynes
	  Barnes of Atlanta, GA; William Barnes, 
      Jr. (Louise) of Austin, TX; 17 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; two 
      sisters-in-law Eloise Thompson of Akron, OH; 
	  Rita Anderson of Frederick, 
      MD; one brother-in-law, Robert (Bobby) 
	  Long and a host of nieces, nephews, 
      cousins, fraternity brothers, and friends. He was preceded in death 
      by four brothers, James Barnes, George
	  Barnes, Morrison Barnes, and 
	  Jasper Barnes; and three sisters,
	  Araminta Jackson, Nora
	  Davis, and Creola Belton. 
          Funeral services are 
      being held at Maranatha Community Church of God, on Monday, November 21, 
      2005 at 12 noon. The viewing will be held Sunday, November 20, 2005 
      from 3 pm to 8 pm at Gary Rollins Funeral Home, 110 W. South St., 
      Frederick, MD. The family will receive visitors and friends from 6 
      pm to 8 pm.
