Claire Ada (duBignon-Turner) Southworth Meniaud
Claire Ada duBignon-Turner was born 7 July
1878 in Glynn County, Georgia to parents Leonidas Henry
duBignon-Turner and Sarah Jane Higginbotham.
Sometime after the Civil War, Leonidas and his siblings
changed their surname to Turner, therefore you will find them
with the name duBignon and Turner in many early
records. Leonidas was one of three children born
illegitimately to Charles Henri Poulain duBignon and his
mistress Sarah Ann (Maccaw) Aust. The duBignon family has a long and very rich history in the Coastal Georgia area; you can read about some of their history by clicking here. Also, for those of you who are related to the family and are members of Facebook, you can join the duBignon Descendants. Sometime between October 1903 and May 1904, Ada married William Jeremiah Southworth who died shortly thereafter on 9 February 1908. He was born and raised in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio and this is also where he and Ada married. At the moment it is unknown by me how this couple met and stranger still is Ada's choice in a second husband. According to a living cousin, Jacques Meniaud and Claire Ada Turner married in Paris on 17 January 1912. Ada went from living in relative poverty due to the losses sustained by the duBignon family after the Civil War to living in splendor with her second husband in their castle in France; her first husband was no pauper either. The photos seen below were shared with GlynnGen.com by the living cousin, Jean Labaune from France with permission to share them with other duBignon descendants. If any of you know more about Ada's marriage to W.J. Southworth, please email the webmaster. Right now this is all we know about William himself; there are many family trees online going further back but we would like to know more about him and his life with Ada.
