            Brunswick, Ga., October 21.—(Special.)—Death did its work today, and tonight, beneath the sod in Oak Grove cemetery, five victims of the yellow plague sleep within its arms.  Three more are beyond the power of earthly skill to save.  Down Brunswick’s streets today the dead wagon moved rapidly, carrying the unfortunates to the graves that awaited them.  Back and forth the wagon passed, and as one grave was filled another was dug beside it.  The ministers, from early dawn, drove rapidly to the bedsides of their people; but their prayers could not save the lives they so anxiously watched passing away.  As the breath left the body of one, a messenger stood at the door waiting to direct the ministers to another.  They were powerless to save, and could only pray.  Noble, self-sacrificing ministers, He above alone knows all the good work they have done today.  As the newspaper men hurried fro house to house, getting a list of the dead and dying, they, at least, saw something of their labors.  The ministers of Brunswick, known now throughout the land, can die, should it be ordered, with the consciousness that they labored through famine, pestilence and death for their people’s sake, and at the throne of God, when their time comes, none can doubt, who knows their work, the reward that will await them.  In the golden book, the names of Thompson, Cook, Hennessey, Winn and Perry will shine with a light that cannot be dimmed, for their record is one of noble deeds.  C.W.D.

DYING RAPIDLY—The Pestilence Breaks Its Previous Records at Brunswick

            Brunswick, Ga., October 21.—There were officially reported today five deaths and forty-nine new cases, the record breaker of the epidemic.  The dead on the list are:  Whites—Burr Winton, Herman Grundy, Alexander Pritchard and Mrs. Oberlauter.
            At 9:30 o’clock tonight William C. Weed died.  He was a victim of imprudent nursing.  His nurse, through feeling for the man begging for food, like all yellow fever patients do, gave him, against the physician’s orders, some nourishing food.  He might have been saved had this not been done.
            The new cases are:  Whites, in Brunswick, 7; Hilda Poulsen, Bessie Firth, Samuel Silverstein, W.A. Line, Thomas Mulligan, F. McC. Brown and Mrs. Currie.
            Whites, on St. Simon’s, 3—Thomas Lambright, Monroe Lambright and Mrs. Taylor, making the total new cases of whites 10.
            To the official lists of deaths should be added one that occurred this afternoon, Lytton Hazelhurst, a negro boy on North Amherst street.
            Besides this a negro child, Pinkie Wilson, died and her death certificate, issued October 18^th by Dr. Robert Hazelhurst, read:  “Cause of death, yellow fever; dead before physician reported her.”  This death, although occurring three days ago, has never been reported.
            This makes a total of seven yellow fever deaths that should be counted today.  Two others are hourly expected to die, Ernest George and Adolph Lavine.  There is no possible hope for them.  Two other deaths occurred today, Essie Beckman, a negro child, and Mrs. Scranton, but neither from yellow fever.
            The warm weather following the few days of rain and the cool spell has brought the disease rapidly to the front.  There are now 258 under treatment, 60 white and 198 colored.  The outlook is not cheering for twenty-five days yet.  When the dread of famine seems to be disappearing and the people are breathing easier deaths roll up and the fever increases alarmingly.
            One new case is reported at Jesup today, a son of R.W. Tindall, white.
            Four patients were discharged.  Six are now under treatment.

            Christopher “Scooter” O’Berry, 20, of Brunswick died Saturday at Oceanside Nursing Home, Tybee Island.
            A native and lifelong resident of Glynn County, he had attended Glynn Academy.
            A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Chapman Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Danny Stillwell officiating.
            Survivors include his mother, Pamela O’Berry Harden; three sisters, Casey Ribron, Katina Underwood and Danielle Marchman; a niece, Krista Barrs; and a nephew, Joshua Minchew, all of Brunswick; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.  Chapman Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

            Walter Thomas O’Brien Sr., 81, of Brunswick, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at his residence.
            Mr. O’Brien was a native of Brunswick for 58 years and spent 23 years in the U.S. Navy.  He attended the St. Joseph School and was a graduate of Glynn Academy and much additional training and classes in the U.S. Navy.  He was a veteran of World War II, Korean Conflict, Cuba Blockade, Middle Eastern conflict and Vietnam and retired from the U.S. Navy in 1967.  he retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Brunswick in 1987.
            He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, V.F.W. Post No. 2588, American Legion No. 9, Fleet Reserve, Brunswick Exchange Club and Third Order Marist.
            He handled all maintenance and repairs for all church properties, Knight of Columbus and was a Grand Knight, Sunday School A/V person, Lector and Eucharistic Minister.
            He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Joanna Newman O’Brien; and two brothers, Joseph and Denis O’Brien.
            Survivors include his wife, Agnes Effinger O’Brien of Brunswick; son, Walter T. O’Brien Jr. of Brunswick; four daughters, Marie O. MRS. FRANK O’CONNELL DIES

            Mrs. Gertrude Sullivan O’Connell, 75, of 32 Redwood St., widow of Frank O’Connell, died last night at “Ocean Lodge,” her Ocean Avenue summer home.
            Born in Newport, daughter of Jeremiah K., and Gertrude Issler Sullivan, she had been active in various organizations, including Salve Regina College Guild, of which she was a charter member.
            Mrs. O’Connell leaves a son, Jay K. O’Connell, and two granddaughters, Linda and Ann O’Connell.
            Her husband, who died July 27, 1932, was founder and president of the Petroleum Supply Co.  Her father, J.K. Sullivan was a well-known contractor, a former street commissioner and a bank and corporation director.
            The funeral of Mrs. Gertrude O’Connell of 12 Redwood St., widow of Frank O’Connell, was held today in St. Mary’s Church.  The Rt. Rev. Msgr. John J. Tully, pastor of St. Rose of Lima Church in Warwick, celebrated the solemn high mass.  The Rt. Rev. Msgr. John J. Kenney, pastor of St. Brendan’s Church in East Providence, was deacon and the Rev. Gerald F. Dillon, pastor of SS. John and Paul Church in Coventry was sub-deacon.
            Sealed in the sanctuary were the Rt. Rev. Msgr. James V. Greene, pastor, and the Rev. George D. McCarthy of St. Mary’s Church, and the Rev. Joseph J. Lamb, pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Warren.
            Attending the mass were Sister Mary Martina and Mother Mary Hilda, representing Salve Regina College; a delegation from Salve Regina Guild, and sisters from St. Mary’s Convent.

FORMER RESIDENT DIES IN ATLANTA

            Miss Annie O’Connor died Friday in a private hospital in Atlanta.  For many years a resident of Brunswick, where she was well known by many friends, she had made her home in Atlanta for the past 20 years.
            Miss O’Connor is survived by one sister, Mrs. Robert R. Jackson, of Atlanta, and several nieces and nephews.
            Funeral services were held here Sunday morning, burial being in Oak Grove cemetery.

BRUNSWICK MAN INJURED FATALLY IN TRUCK MISHAP

            A Seaboard Construction Co. employee was fatally injured today when a dump truck he was driving overturned on State Route 40 at St. Marys.
            The State Patrol said Harris Branham O’Conner, 26, 3102 Peninsula Avenue, was within the St. Marys city limits, driving toward Kingsland when he apparently lost control of the truck.
            The mishap occurred at 8:20 a.m., the patrol reported.
            Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James O’Conner, he is survived by three brothers.

SERVICES TOMORROW FOR HARRIS O’CONNOR

            Funeral services for Harris Branham O’Connor, who was killed at St. Marys yesterday when his truck left the road, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Gordon Hunter officiating.  Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, with the Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
            He had lived in Brunswick for the past 18 years, coming here from Sylvania.  He had been employed by the Seaboard Construction Co. for only a week.  He served with the Army from 1957 through 1959, and was a member of the reserve unit here.
            Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.D. O’Connor; three brothers, Donald, William and Edward, all of Brunswick.
            The body will be placed in the church at 2 o’clock to await the hour of service.
            Active pallbearers are Ray Keene, Charles Sellers, J.D. Lowe, Ross Ward, Kenneth James and Kendall James.

            Miss Katharin O’Connor, 76, a former Brunswick resident, died in Miami, Fla., on Nov. 12.  She was a retired registered nurse.

            She is survived by two brothers, Thomas W. O’Connor of Miami, and Eugene O’Connor of Palatka, Fla.; a niece, four nephews and several grand nieces and nephews.

MRS. T. O’CONNOR PASSES AWAY AT HOME YESTERDAY—DEATH OF ESTIMABLE WOMAN, THOUGH NOT UNEXPECTED, WAS SUDDEN

            Brunswick was saddened yesterday morning by the announcement of the death of Mrs. Thomas O’Connor, who passed away at her home on Union street at 2 o’clock Saturday morning.
            Mrs. O’Connor had been in poor health for some time and the end, though sudden, was not altogether unexpected.
            The deceased was born in New York, May 7, 1837, and was the daughter of James and Catherine MacLachlen, whose remains lie in Calvary cemetery in that city.  She was well connected, being the cousin of Dr. Thomas Nevin and Thomas Addis Emmett, of New York City, their great charitable work among their great charatible [sic] work among [sentence was repeated] the poor.
            In 1871 she was married to Thomas O’Connor, a prominent cotton broker of Apalachicola, Fla., and in 1871 they removed to Brunswick.  During her long residence of more than fifty years in Brunswick, Mrs. O’Connor had endeared herself to an unusually large circle of friends by her most lovable disposition and other beautiful traits.  She was a good, Christian woman and was loved and esteemed by all who knew her.
            She is survived by six chillren [sic], James O’Connor and Miss Annie O’Connor, of this city; Mrs. W.A. Maguire and Mrs. R.R. Jackson, of Atlanta; Mrs. H.F. Wiggins, of Albany, and Mrs. J.A. Montgomery, of Savannah.  She also leaves a number of grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
            The funeral of this most lovable woman will be held this afternoon at 3 o’clock from St. Xavier’s Catholic church, Father Petit officiating.

FUNERAL OF MRS. THOS. O’CONNOR YESTERDAY

            The funeral of Mrs. Thomas O’Connor, aged 87, whose death occurred early Saturday morning, was held from St. Xavier’s Catholic church, yesterdaw [sic] afternoon.
            Rev. J.A. Petit officiated, and a vast congregation filled the church, attesting the love and esteem in which this pioneer citizen was held by the people of the city.  Many floral remembrances also indicated this fact.
            The pallbearers were Messrs. L.A. Robinson, R.M. Stephens, Thos. O’Connor, Morton Wiggins, J.D. O’Connor, and Norris T. Pindar, of Savannah.
            The interment was in Oak Grove cemetery.

            The remains of Mr. Thos. O’Connor, whose sad death occurred on last Sunday were tenderly laid to rest on Tuesday, in Oak Grove cemetery.
            The remains were followed to their last resting place by a large number of sorrowing friends.  The following gentlemen acted as pall bearers:

            Mrs. John Olsen, who has been quite ill for some time, passed away at her home on Wolf street at an early hour yesterday morning. Mrs. Olsen has been critically ill for the past several days and her death was expected at any time. She is survived by her husband and four children, Misses Olga and Clara Olsen and John and Lewis Olsen, all of them residing in this city.

            James L. [Jimmie] Olsen, 61, died this morning at his home at 805 Second Avenue, after an extended illness.
            Mr. Olsen spent all his life in Brunswick, having been born here.  He had been with Brunswick Pulp and Paper Co. as power engineer for the past 23 years.  He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion.  He had been very interested in Boy Scout work and was a veteran of World War I.
            Mr. Olsen is survived by his wife; one son, James L. Olsen, Jr.; one sister, Mrs. John Carr, Brunswick; and two cousins.

JOHN OLSEN, AGED CITIZEN, PASSED AWAY HERE TODAY

            John Olsen, 69 years of age, passed away at his home, 311 Wolf street, at 2:30 o’clock this afternoon, following a short illness.  Mr. Olsen suffered a stroke of paralysis on Monday and his condition had been serious since that time.
            Mr. Olsen came to the United States 39 years ago, and soon after his arrival in this country he came to Brunswick, where he has since resided.  He was well known among a large circle of friends in the city, especially in marine circles, with which he had been connected for years.
            The deceased is survived by four children, Mrs. Olga Melson, of Brooklyn, Mrs. N.N. Gates, of Columbus, Ga., Albert Olsen of Philadelphia and Louis Olsen, of this city.
            The funeral will be held from the family residence Saturday afternoon but the exact hour has not been announced.  Undertaker Edo Miller will be in charge.

FUNERAL YESTERDAY

            The funeral of the late John Olsen, who died on Friday, was held at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon from St. James Lutheran church.  The following gentlemen acted as pall bearers:  Walter Nathan, Capt.             Mr. John R. “Jack” Olsen Sr., 82, of Darien was called home to the Lord on Monday, Dec. 24, in Brunswick.
            He was born Dec. 22, 1930, in Darien to the late Marie M. and Richard Louis Olsen Sr. of St. Simons Island.  He was the middle child of five siblings, Elizabeth, Richard “Buddy” Jr., Jack, Kay and Mickey.  Mr. Olsen was raised on Sapelo Island and attended grammar and high school in Darien.  Throughout his school years, he was an avid athlete and was a lifeguard on St. Simons Island as a young man.  He graduated from Darien High School in 1950 and attended North Georgia College in Dahlonega.
            Afterwards, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served three years in Japan.  By the early 1960s, he had returned to Glynn County permanently to settle down and raise a family of his own.  Mr. Olsen retired from Georgia Pacific in 1996 and returned to his beloved Darien.
            As a resident of Darien, he was an active member of the American Legion and could frequently be found at the Waffle House or Huddle House, where he enjoyed visiting with old friends and making new ones over a cup of coffee.  Mr. Olsen was a lifelong resident of McIntosh and Glynn Counties.
            In addition to his parents, Mr. Olsen is preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Lewis of St. Simons Island.
            Mr. Olsen is survived by three siblings, Richard L. Olsen Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., Mrs. Kay Olsen Carrier of Charlotte, N.C., and Mr. Mickey Olsen of Darien; two children, John R. “Ronnie” Olsen Jr. of Brunswick and Robin Olsen Smith of Dallas, Ga.; and one granddaughter, Delaney Rae Smith of Dallas, Ga.  He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews that will all remember him as the favorite and infamous “Uncle Jack.”
            The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick.
            A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Edo Miller Funeral Home with the Rev. Earl Parrish officiating.  Interment with military honors will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Brunswick.
            Serving as active pallbearers will be Mickey Olsen, G.B. “Bud” Carrier, David Carrier, Mike Olsen, Eric Olsen and Brett Hammond.

            Mrs. Lucy Finnell Olsen, 79, a resident of 805 Second Avenue, died Thursday in the Brunswick Hospital.
            She had been a resident of Glynn County for the past 50 years and was employed with Caple's Studio for about 35 years.
            She is survived by a son, Jimmy Olsen of Brunswick, two granddaughters, and a nephew.
            Graveside services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Palmetto Cemetery with Rev. Francis Daunt and Rev. Talbert Morgan officiating.

            Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth O. Lewis of St. Simons Island and Mrs. Kay O. Carrier of Charlotte, N.C., three sons R.L. “Buddy” Olsen, Jr., of Virginia Beach, Va., John R. “Jack” Olsen of Brunswick, and A.M. “Mickey” Olsen of Atlanta, Ga., two sisters, Mrs. J.R. Bankston of St. Simons Island and Mrs. Elmina Rushin of Mulberry, Fla., 11 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
            The body will remain in the chapel of the funeral home until 11 a.m. Saturday then be placed in the church to await the hour of services.
            The family will be at 4315 7th St., East Beach, St. Simons and will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today.

RICHARD L. OLSEN DIES ON SUNDAY AT EAST BEACH HOME

            Richard Louis Olsen, 77, died Sunday at his home on East Beach, St. Simons Island.
            Olsen, a charter member of St. James Lutheran Church, was born and reared in Brunswick.  He moved to Sapelo Island in 1925 where he served as chief engineer of the Yacht Zapala.  In recent years he was captain of the University of Georgia Marine Institute Research vessel Kit Jones, and retired in 1964 after 40 years service on Sapelo.
            He is survived by his wife, Marie Morrison Olsen; two sisters, Mrs. Chris Nielsen of New York and Mrs. Neal Gates of Phoenix City, Ala.; five children and 10 grandchildren.  The children are Mrs. Elizabeth O. Lewis of St. Simons, Cdr. R.L. Olsen Jr., of Virginia Beach, Va.; John R. Olsen of Brunswick, Mrs. G.B. Carrier Jr., of Charlotte, N.C., and Albert Michael of Atlanta.
            Funeral services under the direction of Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. from the St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jack Warner officiating.  Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery.

            Word has been received here of the death Saturday of A.V. Opdenbrow, Sr., at an Augusta hospital.  He was the father of the Rev. A.V. Opdenbrow, Jr., former assistant to the rector of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, who is now in charge of Grace Church, Cairo.
            The burial service was held this afternoon at Christ Church, Valdosta, where the deceased had lived for many years.

SHOOTING AT ST. SIMONS LIGHT HOUSE

            On Sunday morning, at about 8:30, an unfortunate occurrence transpired at St. Simons Light House, in which Mr. Fred Osborne was seriously shot by his assistant Mr. John W. Stevens.  It seem that there had been bad feeling between these gentlemen for several days, and on Sunday morning they went out into the bushes in front of the house to settle their difficulty.  During this interview Stevens threatened to chastise Osborne, when Osborne drew his pistol and ordered him not to advance further, whereupon Stevens went back into the house, took down his double barreled shot gun (which had been previously loaded with buckshot for deer hunting and as Osborne advanced along the path near the fence, leading to the gate, Stevens fired, at a distance of ninety-eight feet, hitting him in four places, only one shot, however, taking serious effect.  This entered the left side of the abdomen, about three and a half inches above the umbilicus, passed directly horizontally to the right at least nine inches, where it burrowed in the muscular wall of the abdomen.  Osborne, at this writing, is doing as well as circumstances will admit, suffering very much—will probably recover.  Of the merits of the case, or who is it to blame in the transaction, we forbear to express ourself, as it will undergo judicial investigation.  It is an affair very much regretted by many friends of both parties.

AN OLD CITIZEN—Who Has Lived in Brunswick, for Forty-three Years—Died This Morning at His Home—Mr. A.G. Osgood Passed Away, Aged 83.

            One of Brunswick’s oldest citizens, a man who has been a resident of the city for 43 years, and who possessed the esteem and confidence of all who knew him, died this morning, at the venerable age of 83—Albert G. Osgood.
            Death came to him at 11 o’clock at his residence on Union street, where for five days he had lain a sufferer from an attack of congestion of lungs.
            Mr. Osgood was born in Saco, Me., on April 27, 1813.  He came to Brunswick in January, 1853.  Here he began business and amassed considerable property, consisting mainly of real estate.  He was a lifelong member of the Methodist church, and held important positions in the church work.  He was a strong, earnest advocate of prohibition and believed that its enactment into statutory law would work the greatest reform possible in our national life.  He was the first to cast a national prohibition ballot in Brunswick.
            Mr. Osgood leaves two daughters, Mrs. M.C. Rowe and Mrs. William Anderson, and a number of grandchildren.  He survived his wife by several years.
            The funeral will occur tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock from the First Methodist church.  Rev Ed. F. Cook conducting the services.  Every one who knew the deceased will be prompt to accord to his life the merit of an honor that was never questioned and a faith that never faltered.

SHERIFF GEO. OWENS PASSED AWAY TODAY—WELL-KNOWN OFFICIAL DIES AT CITY HOSPITAL AFTER LONG ILLNESS

            George M. Owens, 75, Glynn county’s sheriff for 12 years and a deputy sheriff for more than 25 years, passed away at the City Hospital at 1:30 o’clock today, following a long illness.  The sheriff had been in bad health for a year, and had been in the hospital for treatment for two weeks.  His condition had been critical for the past several days.
            Sheriff Owens was born in McIntosh county June 1, 1872.  He removed to Brunswick when a young man, and had since been a resident of the city.  He was well known and popular throughout the county and his large number of friends will regret to learn of his death.
            Sheriff Owens served as a deputy sheriff under the late Sheriff W.H. Berrie and the late Sheriff R.S. Pyles, having been elected sheriff after the death of the latter 12 years ago.  In his younger days he was active in many local circles, and during the long period he had been connected with the sheriff’s office he made a fine record.
            Mr. Owens is survived by his wife and seven children, Mitchell E. and Tom E. Owens and Mrs. Margaret Owens Moore, of this city; Mrs. Mose Edenfield, of Darien; Harry and Eugene Owens and Mrs. Ike Roundtree [sic], of St. Simons Island.  Sixteen grandchildren also survive.
            Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Norwich Street Baptist church, to be conducted by the Rev. Charles H. Moss, and burial will be in Palmetto cemetery.  Masonic rites will be held at the graveside.

GLYNN SHERIFF OWENS DIES

            BRUNSWICK – Services for former Glynn County Sheriff Mitchell Edward Owens, 68, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Norwich Street Baptist Church, burial in Palmetto Cemetery here.
            Mr. Owens, sheriff of Glynn County for 22 years before his retirement in 1969, died Saturday in the Glynn-Brunswick Memorial Hospital.  He was a lifelong resident of the county.
            A member and deacon emeritus of the Norwich Street Baptist Church, he was an assistant teacher of the Men’s Bible Class at the church.
            Mr. Owens was an emeritus member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Neptune Chapter No. 153 and a past worshipful master of the Ocean Masonic Lodge No. 214.  He was a life member of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia and a member of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association.

FORMER SHERIFF M.E. OWENS, 68, DIES SATURDAY

            Mitchell Edward Owens, 68, former sheriff of Glynn County, died Saturday at the local hospital after an extended illness.  He was a life-long resident of Brunswick and resided at 812 Old Jesup Road.
            He was a member of the Norwich Street Baptist Church and a member and assistant teacher of the Senior Men’s Bible Class there.  He was a member emeritus of the Order of the Eastern Star, Neptune Chapter 153, a Mason and a past worshipful master of Ocean Lodge 214.
            Owens served in the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office for several years before he was elected sheriff in 1947, serving in that position until his retirement in 1969.  He was a member of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia and a member of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association.

            Funeral services under the direction of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Norwich Street Baptist Church with the Rev. John W. Hunt officiating.  Interment will follow in Palmetto Cemetery.
            Active and honorary pallbearers will be the grandsons:  Mitchell Neil Owens, Paul Owens, Rob Owens, David Wilson Owens, Johnny Owens, Joe Owens, John Owens, Christopher Owens, Mercer Owens, Patrick Owens, James Moore, Scott Moore, Russell Moore, Joffre Moore, Larry Owens and Edward Owens.  Other honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of the Norwich Street Baptist Church and the Senior Men’s Bible Class of the church.
            The family has requested that contributions be made to the Memorial Fund of Georgia Sheriff’s Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 100, Hahira, Ga.

SERVICE TOMORROW FOR P.H. OWENS

            Services for P.H. Owens of Brunswick who died Tuesday will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. at St. Paul’s A.M.E. Church with the Rev. C.W. Williams officiating.
            Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
            He was a native of Hemminsway [sic], S.C. and worked as a local merchant.
            Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Catherine Owens, a daughter, Mrs. Dortha Lee Johnson of Savannah, six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
            Pallbearers will be Oscar Thomas, Charles Wooten, Philip Henkins [sic], James Baker, B.H. Jaudon and John L. Hankerson.
            Brunswick Funeral Home is in charge.

FORMER CHIEF OF POLICE DIED IN CITY LAST NIGHT

            Robert E. Owens, 63, formerly Brunswick chief of police, died at the City Hospital late last night, following an illness of several weeks.  His condition had been critical for the past two weeks.
            Mr. Owens served for many years with the Brunswick police department.  He was for several years assistant chief of police and was promoted to chief, in which position he served for one year.  That was about 35 years ago.
            Mr. Owens had been a resident of Brunswick for 50 years.  He was born in McIntosh county and removed here when a boy.  He is survived by two brothers, Sheriff George M. Owens and Walter T. Owens, and one sister, Mrs. A.A. Harvey, all of Brunswick.  A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
            Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o’clock at the Norwich Street Baptist church, conducted by the Rev. C.H. Moss and Rev. C.C. Davison, and interment will follow in Oak Grove cemetery.  The following will serve as pallbearers:  J.E. Abbott, Arthur Owens, LeRoy Ramsey, J.E. Dubose.  Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Gibson-Hart Funeral Home.
