Oak Grove Baptist Church North West Section, Camden County.
Oak
Grove Church and Cemetery (not to be confused with Oak Grove Cemetery in St.
Marys) are located in northwest Camden County just west of Hwy. 259 and just
south of the Brantley/Camden County line. While the first deed was made in
1890, members of this church had met in this area for years before.
The church suffered through years of rising and falling membership.
Lacking electricity or running water, many newcomers to the county ignore
this old, one-room church. Originally named the Satilla River Baptist
Church, members voted to change it to Oak Grove in 1896. The church is used
only once a year: on the fourth Sunday in May when members hold a
homecoming.
Many of the early members included Harrells, Buies, Drurys,
Flemings, Southwells, Beasleys, and Sweats. A full listing of the
burials in Oak Grove can be found in the Online Burials Section.
A full history can be found at the Bryan-Lang Library.
A history booklet could be purchased at one time from the Oak Grove Trust ($5.00). Donations made to the church and cemetery trust are tax deductible and can
be made out to and sent to:
